Hypothetical Case (basic details only): The patient is 72 year old female who smokes. She complains of extreme fluid retention in lower two limbs and lower abdomen. Breathing is difficult and she is only able to sleep while sitting erect in a reclining chair. Patient has underlying conditions: Obesity, Coronary Artery disease, Edema, Hypertensions, Dyslipidemia, Ischemia, and hx of quadruple Coronary Artery Bypass Graft. Current dx: Heart Failure Medical Model: A number of tests would be performed to analyze the extent of damage of the heart. Holistic Health Model: Holistic methods to treat heart failure include quitting smoking, maintaining a proper body weight, exercising, eating a healthy diet. If an individual is 20% or more over the ideal body weight for the particular age, height, and gender, this puts an extra strain on the heart. The heart will not be able to pump blood efficiently enough to the places where the body needs blood (WMD, 2015).
Lowering sodium, trans fat, and saturated fat consumption are important for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. This also will reduce future incidence of a myocardial infarction. Increasing intake of fresh non processed food such as fruits and vegetables. Limiting red meat portions to 5oz in a day will also help. Also finding other alternatives to proteins and good fats such as fish, nuts, and soy based vegetarian products. Alcohol consumption should be monitored and at a

moderate level. No more than one a day for females and not more then 1-2 for males (AHA, 2015). Quitting smoking and exercising regularly will also help. Exercise strengthens the heart and blood vessels, aids in reducing blood pressure, and helps boost HDL cholesterol levels. Learning to relax and not stress will help prevent and treat heart disease. “Lower amounts of anxiety and anger lead to healthier lives and is easier on the heart. Beneficial methods include meditation and yoga” (WMD, 2015). .
