Composed a rigid mountain range it is situated in the northwest of Kure and Emperor Seamount. Starched from the northwest to southwest beneath the Pacific Ocean it consists of many seamounts, shallow banks and reefs along the line. More than 75 volcanoes have been found so far that are stretched over 3600 miles. Transformed over a span of 70 million years as the result of intense volcanic activity, the movement of Pacific Plate over the stationary hot spots has created a large series of volcanos across the island. A previous interpretation showed a sharp bend in the chain about 2200 miles northwest to the island.…
“Why We’re All Lava Surfers” is an article written by Peter Stark. Detailing his travels in Indonesia and Iceland, along with his fascination on plate tectonics, Mr. Stark explains to the reader why we’re all “lava surfers.” The Earth is a ball of a molten lava, while we rest on the outer “crust”. These “crusts”, or tectonic plates, are driven by lava underneath and slowly moves around the Earth. When these plates meet, natural phenomenon occurs.…
Alanis intention was to show the balance between the two sides of the Hawaiians and the Foreigners. Kamau and Kamau Aʻe writer Alani Apio says, “I look at what Michael stands for, and it is a hard place to be, exploring the extremes helps us to try find balance”. He believes that Hawaiians are in a predicament that can’t be easily handled. But at the same time feels a connection to the foreigners or tourist that visit the islands and are constantly being discriminated. Like Apio, Haunani K. Trask shares and shows many of the same beliefs of Apio.…
These Hawaiian Islands have been inhabited for centuries before the first ships sailed across the Pacific. Hawaiian Islands have been shrouded in mystery since their history had been passed along vocally for centuries. Hawaiian culture hasn’t changed drastically ever since they inhabited the islands, until European and American explorers discovered the islands. This pair interested me the most because both nations have two completely different identities, but the Hawaiian Islands later become part of the United States. These nations have completely different history, religion, clothing, culture, and many more.…
Spreading along the east and gulf coast of the United States of America are unique geologic formations known as barrier islands. Not only are these landforms neat to visit, but also they have the important role of protecting the coastline by reducing the effects storm winds and waves can have. Barrier Islands, like Assateague Island, can form in different ways, but all are constantly undergoing changes from various factors. The focus of this paper will be how barrier islands form and move, these islands’ importance, and the vulnerability of Assateague Island. First, a simple definition provided in the Merriam- Webster dictionary of a barrier island is “a long broad sandy island lying parallel to a shore that is built up by the action of waves,…
The Easter Island or Isla de Pascua covers roughly 64 square miles in the South Pacific Ocean 2,300 miles from Chiles west coast. It currently has 887 still existing statues averaging 13 feet tall carved out of tuff which is the light, porous rock formed by consolidated volcanic ash on the island which proved that there was a rich culture among the settlers which first discovered it. These staues were placed on ceremonial stone platforms called ahus however till this day there is no information on why these statues were created in such numbers and scale in addition to how were they even moved throughout the island. During the middle stages of the islands discovery (1050- 1680) the ahus also contained burial chambers and the images portrayed…
This letter goes out to the government of Hawaii. I say to all you officials, “Please help our state as we face many hardships during this great trauma.” Lately, I have not been able to call my home a paradise where I once lived in, rather now I find it a death sentence. This disease we live in today affects our people, and cuts our states population into half. I feel the need to step up and become the representative for my people.…
"Have humility and integrity and with your perseverance, the world can be yours. "-Clarence T. C. Ching. This quote made me want to make Hawaii a better place by being humble and determined to make differences. Over the past two years I have been inspired by so many people who change the world.…
When the eruption first occurred, columns of ash were sent into the sky and could be seen for days. The eruption lasted for over 3 1/2 years. Even with the large amount of erosion caused by the pounding seas, the island core quickly solidified as rock. Lava flows formed a shell that helped assure the continuing existence of the island.…
America (or should I say... Turtle Island), pre 1492, was a very different time in history. It was a time of gratefulness for mother earth and all that she provided. The air was clean, the water was pristine, and the land and animals were respected by the country’s inhabitants. There was a mutual understanding of this respect for mother earth and the Natives were well known for this philosophy of life.…
Today in Hawaii, there are three active volcanoes, two on the Big Island, the Maunaloa and the Kilauea and the Loihi that is located underwater a little ways off the Big Island. There are seven major volcanoes in Hawaii to this day, but there are countless others throughout the islands. The seven major volcanoes include Haleakala on Maui, the Maunaloa, Kilauea, Mauna Kea, Loihi, Diamond Head, and the Kohala. The last big Hawaiian volcano eruption was in 1801, but the Maunaloa last erupted in 1984 and Kilauea has been erupting continuously since 1983. As I said earlier, Loihi is located underwater and has been erupting since 1996, and scientist think that is may break the surface and for a ninth island in about 250,000…
There are over 1500 active volcanoes is the world. Sometimes we do not know when a volcano is going to erupt, but most of the times the volcano itself gives early signs of eruption. Some of those signs are small earthquakes beneath the volcano, swelling or increase heat and gases coming out of the volcano. A volcano is a mountain or hill, having a crater or vent where lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gases are being released from the earth's crust. One of the many active volcanos in the world is Mount Agung.…
Much of the lava has reached the ocean, enlarging the island of Hawaii by about 500…
The volcano is filled with magma, which then turns into lava when it erupts, it is white liquid when it erupts then changes colours through yellow, orange, red and then when it solidifies it turns black and hard.[Source 6] The volcano also consists of gas (such as steam and hydrogen sulfide), ash and lumps of solid volcanic rock (such as scoria).Volcanoes are at or near the edges of the tectonic plates. The reason why volcanoes erupt is that there is too much pressure in the earth and then that leads to the release of the magma(lava), and the plates will move. Sometimes major volcanic eruptions also produce tsunamis. It says in source 4 that for a volcano to produce a tsunami you will need: ‘A volcano near the coast, An eruption that sends a large enough volume of material into the water to displace a significant volume of…
Mt. Pinatubo, Philippines: Impacts and Human Actions The stratovolcano Mount Pinatubo began showing signs of erupting on the 15th of July 1991. Through a series of events Mt. Pinatubo erupted and effected the surrounding areas. Throughout this paper will be discussed the impacts, including primary and secondary, along with impacts changed by humans. Mount Pinatubo eruption was the second largest eruption in the 20th century, making it have many impacts not only locally but globally.…
