Harriet was born in Dorchester County, Maryland in 1820. She was first named Araminta Harriet Ross. When she was younger she was tagged with the nickname, “Minty”.

It was nearly 90 miles to Philadelphia from Maryland. She recollected the feeling it gave her when she crossed into the freedom of Pennsylvania.
“When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through the trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven.”
Harriet was active though out the Civil War, she worked in the Union Army as a cook and nurse. later she became a scout and spy. She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in this war. It was called the Combahee River Raid. This raid set over 700 slaves free, that were in slaved in South Carolina. This is just a fraction of the slaves that this amazing woman had saved.
Harriet Tubman was admirable, caring, and brave. Ms. Tubman had many books written about her. An admirer of Harriet, Sarah Bradford, wrote a book about her named, Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman. She cared for everyone not just slaves. She wanted everyone to make everyone in the world equal. She also was extremely brave, Harriet kept fighting until the very end. She risked her own life for the enslaved people.
