The second amendment was ratified in December 1791. This amendment states “ A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” So when did the debate and use of gun control start? It may have began when the President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in November 22, 1963. But are there any social justice principles that relate to gun control? In my opinion there are two social justice principles that relate to gun control. The first one is rights and responsibilities, which is defined as every person has a fundamental right to life and all those things needed for human dignity and every person in turn has a responsibility to each other, to their family, and to the larger society to assure that these right are preserved and protected for all. I believe this relates to gun control because we are responsible for making sure guns do not get into the wrong hands and when guns are used to use them in a way that protects life not violates it. This social justice principle is defined as we are the stewards of God’s creation and we are therefore called to protect our planet and the natural blessing and resources it provides for all people and generations. For starters one of the biggest things politicians and other people look to when trying to create pro or anti-gun laws is the constitution. Many of the pro-gun supporters will bring up the second amendment which states: “ A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This amendment clearly states that citizens of the United States are allowed to bear arms and that weapons for our military are a necessity for our free country and that this right shall not be taken away. When a survey asked what they thought about gun control almost all of them were in favor of background checks to help end gun violence.
