The Gujarat Science City in Ahmedabad is functioning under the aegis of Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat. Objectives of the Science City are:
• To develop a scientific temper
• To nurture and stimulate scientific faculties of mind
• To promote innovative and experimental activities
• To showcase breakthroughs in Science and Technology
• To establish a countrywide network
It was Shri Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, who had initiated the Science City project in late 1990s. He had visited many Science Centres abroad and also Sentosa Island in Singapore where he was impressed by the centres dedicated to science …show more content…
of Gujarat deputed some senior Bureaucrats and a few Governing Council Members of GCSC along with a representative of Tata Consultancy Services on a study tour which included visit to Science City, Kolkata. This period involved Dr Saroj Ghose, former Director General of National Council of Science Museums and also the creator of the first Science City in Kolkata in 1997. Under his guidance right from preparing the project and execution of the project as an advisor, work started in 1999. Another important appointment was of Shri Apparao Rajamathanty as Manager of the Science City project from 2000 to 2013. The Grand Inaugural and Dedication Ceremony of the ‘Hall of Space’ and Hall of Science’ of Gujarat Science City was held on 4 May 2008. It was graced by Shri L.K. Advani, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Shri Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat. Also present on the occasion were Dr Saroj Ghose and Shri Apparao Rajamathanty.
This entire Science City project needed a backup of a huge amount of money which came to approximately rupees 190 crores. After the opening, an amount of about rupees 77 lakhs was required for maintenance of the entire campus annually.
Shri S.D. Vohra, B.Sc., was first Director of Gujarat Science City. Others who headed the centre subsequently were Shri D.B. Mehta, M.A., Shri Dilip S. Gadhvi, B.E. (Elec). Presently Shri Ashok V. Mehta, B.Com, LLB is the Director of Gujarat Science City.
