To begin with, how can they have freedom when they constantly live in fear of the Thought Police? The purpose of the Thought Police was to keep track of those that were being rebellious against the government. It's the same for other countries you break the law you have to pay the price. As for in the novel 1984 the consequences are more brutal. To demonstrate, in the novel 1984 it says,”The great purges involving thousands of people, with public trials of traitors and thought-criminals who made abject confession of their crimes and were afterwards executed”( Orwell 26). Therefore what this was able to show the punishment for committing these thoughtless crimes was to be killed. The citizens weren't given a fair trial or weren't given the choice to serve time for their crime. Another example would talk about the punishment for it,”Thoughts and actions which when detected, mean certain death are not formally forbidden, and the endless purges, arrests, tortures, imprisonments, and vaporizations”(Orwell 124). In that event this was able to show that punishment was so cruel to the people of Oceania. Not only that but this showed suffering to the people as well as what they had to go
