Genetic engineering is a concept that induces terrifying reactions in many people. Visions of disgusting and inhuman mutations tend to flash across the minds of those adamantly against any form of DNA manipulation. Genetic engineering is a science that is used to manually add DNA into an organism. The world has practiced forms of genetic engineering for centuries, starting with selective breeding. Humans have turned wolves into common household pets with this technique. Now, science is changing drastically every day. In one lifetime, we have seen a sheep cloned, different species bred to create one hybrid, vegetables perfected and strengthened, and even organs grown in petri dishes. Many people are against all types of genetic engineering for a variety of reasons, believing it to be dangerous and unnatural. There have been articles, debates, and protests attempting to fight against the use of genetic engineering. Recently, we have seen intensive debates on STEM cells and genetically modified foods. Yet, genetic engineering has given the world breakthrough treatments for diseases that were once deadly. We now have options to create organs for life-saving transplants. There are pros and cons to the practice of genetic engineering, but there are good and bad sides to all research, science, and technology. If we were too scared to test on lab mice, then we may not have found cures to once deadly diseases. If we never accepted the use of the big, scary, automated carriages, then we may have never had cars. Although many people have their own differing opinions, genetic engineering is the key to finding cures to genetic disorders that are an increasing threat, such as autism, sickle cell anemia, down syndrome, and more.
