Advances in the field of genetic engineering have allowed scientists to generate genetically modified cells and organisms for research and biomedical purposes. During the past decade, numerous improvements have been made to better the world of agriculture. A few of these improvements are DNA isolation, disease resistance, and the ability to precisely locate genes.
Agricultural performance rests on the interactions of genetics, management and the environment. Developing plant varieties expressing good agronomic characteristics is the ultimate goal of plant breeders. However, for many years, GE crops were underperforming. Desirable genes were often being transferred with undesirable genes. They were not sustainable enough to put on the market.

Mastitis is a disease that infects the mammary glands of cows. While some populations retain increased resistance to this disease, few breeding techniques can completely eradicate these infections. Thanks to improved disease resistance technology, cows can be genetically engineered to be resistant to mastitis. There are numerous other diseases that can be combatted with this type of technology, but it is still relatively new.
In addition, this process affects crops also. The importance of sustainable agriculture has become a critical issue. Plant diseases continue to play a major limiting role in agricultural production. The most common way plant diseases are eliminated is by the use of pesticides, but genetic engineering produces plants that can fight of diseases with no pesticides necessary.
