In the article,The Role of Social Media on Body Image & Body Stereotypes by Taryn T, spoke about this problem. They wrote, “Research has shown that media exposure to unattainable physical perfection is detrimental to people, especially women, and that the detrimental effects are currently more the rule than the exception”(T 1). I think the message that the author is sending about gender is that women are influenced to have a perfect body, but that shouldn’t be a problem. The purpose of this text was to inform women that they don’t have to follow stereotypes and what society thinks. It acknowledges my stereotype, it’s influences, and it’s origin but informs people why it shouldn’t be a problem in modern day society. A woman’s view on an ideal body depends on how she was brought up. What she watched and was taught greatly influenced how she views her body and her desires. In an article, Effects of Media by NEDA, they wrote about how media such as television and social websites or apps influence our mindset about ourselves and other people. They had a proven theory that what we see influences us, “Numerous correlational and experimental studies have linked exposure to the thin ideal in mass media to body dissatisfaction, internalization of the thin ideal, and disordered eating among women… Black-oriented television shows may serve a protective function; Hispanic and Black girls and women who watch more Black-oriented television have higher body satisfaction”(NEDA
