Topic: How has the Evolution of Time and Mass Media Influenced and Changed the Perception of Body Image?
Thesis: In today’s culture, body image norms are greatly influenced by fashion and what is portrayed in the media. Establishing unrealistic standards of beauty can cause women to go to drastic measures to obtain what is seen as correct in today’s society.
Outline:
I. Women in the 50s-60s
A. 1950 embraced women for their curves
1. Women took pills to gain weight to obtain perfect curves
2. Media pushed “skinny girls are not glamorous girls”
B. 1960 took a turn for thin

1970 encouraged women to keep an extremely thin figure to be beautiful
1. Noticeable increase of women with eating disorders
B. Fitness was also introduced as important in order to keep a thin yet muscular figure.
1. Fitness group centers were established for women to workout together in groups
2. Clothing was made more provocative and to only be worn by thin/fit women.
C. 1980 continued fitness and thinness
1. Women athletes were seen in the media glamorizing their sculpted bodies
2. Men expected women to have perfect bodies, which influenced the way women obtained this image
3. Dieting became a trend to help women shed pounds
D. Eating disorder awareness
1. Singer died in 1983 due to anorexia which brought awareness of this disease to the public eye
III. 90s-Now
A. Dissatisfaction in body image begins at a young age
1. Surveys show girls as young as 10 begin dieting from being teased by peers.
2. Body dysmorphic disorder is seen in young women. This is when your appearance will always be negative towards your body while looking in the mirror
