Throughout the years society has managed to give both men and women certain gender roles or expectations given to a person because of their gender. This essay will discuss how society has managed to give these gender roles through many different outlets such as the media, colors, people, etc. Through the use of these outlets society has managed to subtly and sometimes obviously enforce gender roles on people. Many times men or women feel that they have to follow their gender roles and they sometimes have to become someone they’re not just to please society. People become so used to society’s gender roles that they slowly start embracing them and they begin to lose their identity. The identity of a person can be lost because of the expectations, especially when these “social norms” are constantly being presented. By specifically explaining and going into detail on how society pushes these gender roles on men and women, the essay will show how this has prevented people from expressing their true identity.
