America is made up of many different people from different cultures, races, religions and so forth, therefore it is so important to protect all Americans regardless of their individual attributes. The American Government textbook says that “Civil rights are, at the most fundamental level, guarantees by the government that it will treat people equally, particularly people belonging to groups that have historically been denied the same rights and opportunities as others,” in chapter 5.1. Under the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, “No State shall . . . deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” (Krutz, Ch 5.1, Defining Civil Rights). Civil Rights guarantees that the government should treat a person or group equally regardless of their race, gender, religion, sexuality, disability or any other attribute. The Fourteenth Amendment states that all people have the right to be treated equal regardless of their individual attribute. However, sometimes a person may be treated different if there is a reason for rational bias like age, or GPA. African Americans struggled for equality for a very long time. There were many court cases that made progress in desegregating America. A major case is Brown v. Board of Education, it led to desegregation of schools because it allowed African Americans to attend public schools. Women have also fought very hard for equal treatment. Even today women are still fighting for equality. The glass ceiling prevents women from rising to the highest positions of organizations in male dominated professions. This is a huge problem because woman deserve to have equal opportunities as men. “A working woman with a college degree will earn, on average, hundreds of thousands of dollars less than a man who does the same work” (Newman, 1006). The only thing that is holding women back is their gender. In the past, men usually were the ones who earned money to support their families. Today, more and more women are single mothers taking care of their children on their own. The government and places of employment should implement policies to allow female’s paid maternity leave and family leave. By doing so women will be able to take care of their children without sacrificing their career. The government should take action in making sure women are not payed less based on their gender. They should also put more effort in protecting women against discrimination in the workplace. “The
