To treat this disorder oral immunosuppressant drugs such as cyclophosphamide are used to the decrease the production of the goodpasture antibodies if the patient has a positive response to drug therapy the treatment is continued up until the syndrome runs its course. Treatment with cyclophosphamide can cause a reduction in white blood cell count and hemorrhagic cystitis. In extreme cases goodpasture syndrome is treated with plasmapheresis. This is used to remove the antibodies from the blood, the blood is taken from the body and centrifuged to separate the white and red blood cells from the plasma containing the goodpasture syndrome antibodies then a plasma substitute is added to the red and white blood cells which is then returned to the body.
