Gastro - Oesophageal Reflux Disease, or commonly known as GERD is a digestive disorder that occurs and affect the lower cardiac sphincter, the circular muscle that constricts and closes the passage way of the bolus (food). Gastro – Oesophageal means the lower oesophagus area and the upper stomach. Reflux means the backwash or return of a substance and in this case the return and backwash of stomach contents back up the oesophagus.
During a normal digestion, the cardiac sphincter is opened to allow the bolus to travel to the stomach and once the bolus has travelled past the cardiac sphincter it closes, to prevent food and acidic stomach juices from flowing back into the oesophagus.

Hiatal Hernia is when part of the stomach moves up into the chest due to the opening of the diaphragm. Many people with Hiatal Hernia will feel no pain (heart burn) within the chest although stomach fluids can be easily back washed into the oesophagus.
Small actions such as coughing, vomiting, straining or sudden physical exertion can cause increase pressure in the upper abdomen resulting in Hiatal Hernia. Obesity and pregnancy contributes into have a Hiatal Hernia although people who are over 50 years old generally have a small Hiatal Hernia.
Hiatal Hernia does not usually require treatments, however severe cases of Hiatal Hernia may need treatment as arteries and veins may be strangled and hence cutting off the blood supply for the whole body, this type of Hernia is called, Para- oesophageal Hernia or a severe case of GERD.
Symptoms of GERD are:
- Heart Burn: due to the back wash of stomach acids from the stomach to the oesophagus
- Chest Pain: due to the stomach acid being splashed around within the …show more content…
The current research undertaken on you disease
Research on GERD is still being continued by doctors and scientist at the Mayo Clinic. One of the successful researches for diagnosing and treating GERD was “Stretta”. This successful research allowed people with GERD to have a functional sphincter again. This new machine allowed people to have the functionality of a working sphincter through emitting electro- pulses within the oesophagus. Other researchers are yet to find other way to diagnose and treat GERD. If and how the disease will be
