We have defined peace as being happy with oneself, no war, freedom from oppression, state of tranquility, to act nonviolently, harmony, and having an agreement between to groups or nations.
From Barash be learned that negative peace is the simple nonexistence of war and that positive peace requires no war but also justice, equality, and a lack of oppression. Before the Syrian revolution the country had negative peace. It was a county that was rich culturally, historically, and it was beautiful. Its citizens were strong, proud, and lively people. What are some appealing things about war and military life? Tie the Hedges article and James article together.
As we discussed in class, some appealing things about war and military life are patriotism, education, sense of service, to protect loved ones, belonging, honor, and hardiness.
Hedges talks about how we get meaning, purpose, and “even with it’s destruction and carnage, it gives us what we all long for in life.” He refers to war as a addicting drug.
James says many of the same things; that the military preserves “our ideals of hardihood.” He says because of its charm and our reluctance to have that thrilling and mesmerizing aspect of our history gone for our lives, for it to no longer be a possible destiny. War is attractive and James point out that we need to find an alternative to replace the harshness of war that creates that same hardiness and allows all that build up energy to be channeled into it, suggesting the Peace Corps as a possible outlet, even if it doesn’t fulfill all the same things.
