The Second Flowering of Islam refers to the rise of the four Islamic Empires which includes the Ottoman Empire, Safavid Empire, Mughal Empire, and Songhay Empire all of which had the goal to spread Islam. We discussed this, because it was a main cause of imperialism, which led to the World Wars.
2. The Columbian Exchange
The Columbian Exchange was where European diseases such as malaria, small pox, and cholera contributed to the wiping out of New World communities. In addition to diseases; goods, animals, and plants were also exchanged to the benefit of both the Europeans and Native Americans.

The leaders, mostly creoles, had no interest in instituting policies that encouraged industrialization. They continued with colonial era policies of production of raw materials. They cane to be known as banana republics due to their unstable economies; or due to over-reliance on production of raw materials. According the textbook on page 568, the industrial revolution was the human response to a rapid increase in human population their global energy demands. The creating of machines that could do much more than humans did, allowed for great innovations, which led to enormous output of goods and services. Opium Wars
The opium wars included one major uprising was that of the Taiping Uprising, 1850-1864, led by Hong Xiuquan, whose members called for a re-organization of the Chinese society. These led to two Opium Wars between Britain and China between 1839 and 1858. Britain won both Wars, which led to the opening up of China for free trade. China emerged from the two Opium Wars in a weakened state, and later that century China suffered humiliating defeats to France and Japan. These loses and embarrassments led to China to join World War I.

Decolonization is the intervening factors that led to the end of European colonial rule in Africa and Asia during 1945 through 1965. The factors were both domestic and international, and they varied from Empire to Empire, and from Colony to Colony. Decolonization is defined as the act of getting rid of colonization, or freeing a country from being dependent on another country.
