The Industrial revolution transformed sport as it was, towards the modern sport we have today. It made sport and leisure an accessible activity which could be engaged in, and enjoyed by all. It created time and resources for the enjoyment of sport, and allowed sport to be more far-reaching, and accessible through developments in technology.
The industrial revolution began in Britain in the late 1700s, and continued through the 18th and 19th centuries. It marks a period through which a largely rural dominated society transformed into a industrialised and urban one. The developments of transport through things such as rail, road, and water resulted in a development of travel. It increased people and athletes ability to travel outside of their own towns and their ability and access to sport(Edelman, Wilson, 2017). Significant advancements in transport included the creation of the steamboat by Robert Fulton in 1807 initially used commercially, but later was used for leisure in the late 1800s. As well as the creation of the steamboat, came the creation of the steam powered railway in the 1820s (“Inventions:Transportation”). With the inventions of theses new forms of transports also came improvements to transport systems from canals being dug, and ports being improved to the important railway systems being developed, which allowed for a truly national sporting life and the quick and wide-spread distribution of newspapers (Holt, 1989). It is important to remember that prior to the industrial revolution the major forms of transportation for people at the time were by animals or foot. The initial purpose of these developments were to aid in the distributions and transport of goods and materials throughout Britain to keep up with the mass production from the industrialisation. However these developments also had inadvertent effects on other things such as sport. The developments connected many different areas of Britain and allowed people to travel easily to places they could’t have previously, and the modern sports industry took advantage of that(Holt, 1989).
