There are some main characteristics you have to know to be able to understand flatland. If you set a penny on a table and look down upon it, it looks like a circle. He visits three different worlds, the first being Lineland. He visits Lineland in a dream, the first person he meets is whom of A Square first thought was a women. A Square finds out that the line he meets is in fact the king. Only by voice and age could the sex be distinguished in Lineland because everyone looks like a straight line. Also the men in Lineland have more than one wife, which A Square thought was appalling. In the end the king tries to kill A Square, but it can’t happen because it is just a vision. When A Square is his real self he is visited by a three dimensional sphere named A Sphere. A Square didn’t know A Sphere was a three dimensional figure until he went to Spaceland and has seen for himself. The sphere takes many figures from Flatland there to discover it for themselves, but if anyone is to speak of it they will be imprisoned. Then the sphere has another vision of going to a place called Pointland. Pointland is just one point itself, and it has no dimension to it what so ever. No one believes the square when he tells everyone one about the three dimensional world Spaceland. He was not supposed to be talking about it to everyone anyways, because the law says anyone who preaches of the three dimensional world will be imprisoned. A Square was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment. He keeps in contact with his brother B Square who is imprisoned in the same facility. He tries to tell his brother the story
