Hard Times in Humboldt County depicts an issue that arises often in different type of industries. When demand is high and supply is plentiful, one of the variables are bound to change. Once that has happened, people within that industry face hardship and must adapt or fail. The video has a vintage feel, however the 1980’s was not that long ago. Within the last 30 years, society has changed its thoughts in some ways and have stayed stubbornly the same in others. For centuries, civilizations have used timber as a reliable building material for buildings and vessels. I believe that the collapse of the timber industry could have been delayed a couple of decades. Trees could have been harvested at a slower rate and with less excess. When something is plentiful, people are not focused on efficient methods of harvesting. Companies were using machinery and tactics that produced the highest result at any cost. The negative effects included creating large scars on the earth from logging vehicles and clear cutting, impacting the surrounding environment. Millions of dollars are spent annually on lobbyists or what I call legal bribing. Political influence can include offering special contracts to land to specific companies that may have happened in the Pacific Northwest collapse, the government siding with corporations over indigenous land as stated in the book “Our Forests… Our Future,” or even today where we have a pipeline that was deemed safe enough for indigenous land, but not safe enough for cities. People who are elected into position are supposed to represent the people and fight for them. Unfortunately, there are elected officials who were voted into power by people who only care about making a profit. People with power tend to help one another.
