To create a cohesive team, trust is the baseline and it is only when team members are willing to be vulnerable with each other and admit their mistakes or weaknesses, that they can begin to build trust. The fear of being vulnerable creates an absence of trust and therefore cannot be built on within the team.
Secondly, teams must be able to engage in healthy conflicts, this enables the best solution to be found in the shortest period of time. When healthy conflicts do not happen and team members do not share their opinions, poor decisions can be made within the team.

Members of the team remain strangers, for this reason people feel uncomfortable and sometimes anxious, most members will remain positive and polite. Because of the high level of uncertainty within the group in this stage there is a high level of dependence on the leader of the group who will most likely play a dominant role because team roles aren't yet fully established. The leader of the group should be prepared to answer many questions on the purpose, aims and objectives of the group.
The second stage is "storming", many people are reluctant to continue after this stage and this is where most teams fail. People often still feel individual rather than a team, therefore begin to push boundaries and challenge each other. Conflict may emerge between subgroups and tension may arise over disagreement of ideas or different working styles. If objectives are not clearly defined then this could lead to the failure of planned goals. Within the care sector it is important that objectives and planned goals are met because ultimately, it's our customers health and wellbeing that is put at risk if they are not met. Within our organisation, Optalis have six clear objectives that as a team we must work towards. Firstly, customer service: We will ensure that we listen to our customers and offer choice.
