When conspiracy theories first gained prosperity among the public, the main point of the dispute was about government plots and secret societies, as if there’s an all-compassing force operating beneath the surface and vilely manipulating the mass. However, the conspiratorial world view was nothing new since during the time of postmodernism, many of the writers have already begun to contemplate the definition and utilization of paranoia. In Lot 49, Oedipa comes to realize that she may, like a paranoid, “be weaving together the patterns of events that she believes she is uncovering” (C 75). Yet all the ambiguities do not guide Oedipa out of dualism; in fact, she still remains in the two exclusive …show more content…
[4] The author Douglas Hofstadter views the world as an entity in essence that is ruled by the collaboration of arts and science, a “musico-logical offering”, a three-dimensional golden braid that incorporates Kurt Gödel’s mathematical logics, M. C. Escher’s paradoxical paintings, and J. S. Bach’s metaphorical compositions (Hofstadter 3). Mathematics is the basis for logical reasoning, music speaks a universal language, and painting is the visualization of all the connections. In Bach’s six-part fugue (or in Bach’s words, “ricercar”, an Italian word means “to seek”) dedicated to King Frederick, there is a “rhythmically irregular and highly chromatic” theme in great complication (7). To imagine the concept of a six-part fugue, “[o]ne could probably liken the task … to the playing of six simultaneous blindfold games of chess, and winning them all” (7). In the painting Waterfall by Escher, the painter visualized the notion of “Strange Loop”, or the Incompleteness Theorem established by Gödel, which is practically impossible in this three-dimensional world and paradoxically feasible in our minds (11). To interpret all these works from a superficial level, they are a mass of chaos; yet just like the notion of entropy, the point is not to attach all the hopes to a single and perfect solution, and retain an open mind to diverse explanations at the same time and still hold
