American Invasion
The BNA colonists voted for Confederation to protect themselves from a possible American Invasion. When the Americans were having the Civil War, British supported the South because of their resources. However, the North won and wanted to take revenge on Britain by taking over British North America. They also wanted to invade BNA because they believed in Manifest Destiny, the belief that it is the natural born right of the Americans to control all of North America. British North Americans were scared because the colonies alone couldn’t possibly defend themselves, but they might be able to defend themselves united. This American Invasion threat helped Confederation by making colonists realize that they would have a higher chance at defending themselves if they were united.
Changing British Attitudes
The British attitudes towards keeping British North America were changing. Britain no longer needed British North American Colonies because their resources were no longer needed. The colonies were also expensive to keep, especially since Britain itself wasn’t profiting much. This wasn’t good news for the colonists of BNA, largely because of the Fenian raids and American Invasion threats. Upper Canada was English-speaking and had the same amount of seats as their opposition, the French-speaking Lower Canada. All decisions that were proposed at Parliament affected the whole province of Canada, and both of the provinces could never agree.
