In the Tragedy of “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare, the characters Romeo Montague, and Tybalt Capulet are an excellent example of a foil because they don’t like each other and are not a like in anyway. A foil is when 2 characters that are opposites of the other help reveal traits of the main protagonist. Romeo is a Montague and Tybalt is a Capulet as I said. The 2 houses have been in a feud for a long time. The 2 characters do not get along and would rather avoid each other at all cost but they find them selves meeting quite often.

Romeo doesn’t want anything to do with the feud. He wants to love. He is an impulsive, energetic, sensitive and immature. These traits are shown when he drinks the poison to kill himself because he believes Juliet is dead (Shakespeare 473). When most people would just mourn and cry about the death of a loved one. Romeo went to an all new extreme and ends his life. He also shows his impulsiveness and after declining to fight tybalt multiple times

He is very full of himself and has a large ego. And god help anyone who may try and hurt his ego. He will unleash a fury upon them. A good example is when he says “Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe, a villain, that is hither come in spite to scorn at our solemnity this night,” (Shakespeare 393). This is when they find Romeo at the dance where he first meets Juliet. Tybalt immediately assumes every Montague is a low life scum without getting to know the person first. He doesn’t try and reason with or talk to anyone he has an issue with he just insults them and demoralizes them from start till end. Tybalt also shows his colors when he says “But this shall not excuse the injuries that thou has done me…” (Shakespeare 427). He jumps to fighting right away instead of talking things out and trying to mend broken bonds. He holds a grudge for a long time and wants vengeance and revenge against anyone who wrongs

A sort of term in which two opposite characters are so different that they make each other standout, so much that they become known. William Shakespeare is a master at incorporating foils into his plays. One play is Romeo and Juliet with many sets of foils which effectively contrasts the characters personalities in the play. In Conclusion, I think that Romeo is a young, inexperienced and impatient but loyal and brave boy. I think that his naivety plays a huge rule in this because love was taken as an extravagant feeling to have when it was not truly happy as the lovers can experience heartbreak and many other obstacles. It seems as if Romeo only more cautious and deliberate, his devastating ending could have been prevented (even though we have not finished the book yet). Amongst friends especially Mercutio, Romeo shows signs of his social and quick witted persona, even with his fond of verbal jousting that is mainly about sex. Lastly, Romeo is like every other male in the world who only unveils their true self to the people who they trust or who understand them.…

As these individuals are comparable, their differing characteristics have heightened contrast, allowing for certain qualities to manifest themselves more fully.
