This negatively affects relationships and oftentimes ruins relationships due to mistakes and arguments. In a poem by Tretheway (2012), she speaks of a memory of a disagreement that she had with her father, a disagreement that affected them severely. “That night we rehearsed our familiar complaints, wine bottles empty, our moods darkening as the candles guttered and flickered out, wax pooling on the table, hardening like the words spilled between us. Now what’s done is done” (Tretheway, 2012, p. 197). Unfortunately, hard words and unforgiving souls create rifts in relationships do not allow either individual to change, or repent. McNulty (2010) discovered that the more a spouse forgives the other for negative behaviors; it increases the amount of negative behaviors. This is due to the notion that forgiveness takes away unwanted outcomes that naturally come with mistakes (guilt, criticism, loneliness).
