In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, the reader can learn through indirect characterization that John Proctor is independent, guilty, and good. John Proctor is an independent man. He does not succumb to the public opinion, and no one can change his mind. In The Crucible, John Proctor openly admits his disdain for Reverend Parris and is not even ashamed to tell Parris himself. Proctor claims that Reverend Parris does not lead the church the right way, and he says that Parris only preaches about an angry God, and does not preach about a merciful and forgiving God. When Proctor comes to Salem to inquire about the reverend’s daughter, Betty, Mr. Putman reprimands him for not coming to the church since the snow had melted. When Cheever takes Elizabeth to jail because of Abigail’s credible accusation that she is a witch, John instantly knows that he must confess about his affair with Abigail. In order to save his wife, Proctor goes to Salem the next day and reveals to the court that he cheated on his wife and had a relationship with Abigail. He declares, “She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands. I know you must see it now” (3.1090). Proctor sacrifices his good name and reputation to rescue his wife, and this demonstrates his goodness. Later, Mary Warren accuses him of being the Devil’s servant, and imprisons him in jail. On the day of his execution, Judge Danforth allows John to speak with Elizabeth. He consults with Elizabeth and asks her if he should confess, or hang. Elizabeth tells him that she will respect either of his decisions. At first, John decides to confess, and Judge Danforth questions him. The judge asks if he saw Rebecca Nurse with the Devil, and John replies, “I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another. I have no tongue for it” (4.1110).This further proves that John is a good man.
