Because different societies have different social standards for women’s dress code, the type of society determines what the standards are for women’s dress code, however, that also depends on the time period. A common example of this would be women wearing oppressive corsets in the early 1900’s and then by the 1920’s, the flapper dress came in style. During the years earlier in the past century, the roles of women have faced major shifts and turns. Women went from being housewives, caregivers or having most of their work being at home to picking up the roles of men. With that being a huge change, the way women dress depends on what their roles are, work-wise. In the book Dress Codes, Ruth P. Rubinstein, the author mentioned that “Rejection of the traditional female role has usually been accompanied by a change in dress” (pg. 99).
