In this study the purpose was to see if daily mindful breathing practices and cognitive reappraisal would help lower anxiety levels of students before or when taking tests or exams. The variables present here are the 36 students (12 in each group), practicing daily training in mindful breathing, or cognitive reappraisal, versus a non-training condition group (control group). The next variable is observed and compared to the different student groups and used to see the effects they bring, which is the level of anxiety towards tests or exams after completing these practices for a fixed period of time. The final results in this study concluded that mindful breathing practices and cognitive reappraisal had a larger degree …show more content…
Through repeating these strategies, they would be more likely to use them automatically in the future. This is an example of implicit memory because the purpose is to encourage the participants to be influenced by these experiences in future situations. Also cognitive reappraising was a wise choice to compare mindful breathing with, as it yields closely related positive effects on anxiety. The group of students practicing mindful breathing were instructed to focus on their internal activities such as breathing, emotion, body sensations, and cognition. The cognitive reappraisal group were instructed to look at stressful or anxiety enhancing situations and interpret them in a positive way or differently. Both of these strategies focus on decentering the attention to dig deep and refocus thoughts to positive of more affective ones. The participants were asked to write down their experiences when doing the conditions and submit it to the experimenter daily. By writing down their experiences and thoughts each day, the experimenter could record the differences each day made through performing the sessions. It also enabled the participants to view their thoughts at a different angle and as they are, such as good, bad, or neutral when writing them down and seeing them visually. Once they can see the reality of their thoughts they can begin to work from there and build up to change thoughts to better or positive
