The events that occurred in the orchard at St. Bonny’s where Maggie was victimized by the older girls is a central theme throughout the book. Initially, it is believed that the girls had been a part of the group of girls that had bullied Maggie after she fell. But near the end of the book, Roberta confesses that she had lied when she said that the two girls had kicked Maggie. But she admits that she had wanted to. They both admit that Maggie had become a symbolization of their respective mothers and so they had associated all the feelings of abandonment and insecurity with Maggie.
When these events are initially mentioned in the book, Twyla describes Maggie as ‘sandy-colored’. But later on, when
