St Paul is remembered as one the most influential figures of the early church. Today he is seen as being somewhat controversial, but his conversion and life continue to inspire modern Christians. He could be considered as being the first Christian theologian and his teachings are still massively important to Christians today and still influence Christian study and thought. Paul’s writings make up the majority of the New Testament and he worked tirelessly to nurture and support the early church communities, most of his letters being responses to problems suffered by these communities. The Spirit allows the believer to have an intimate relationship with God; ‘’but whoever is united to the Lord is one with him in spirit’’ (NIV 1 Corinthians 6:17).
In Paul’s eyes the Spirit literally transforms the believer into a person who is one with Christ and is saved by Christ’s death on the cross. All of Paul’s actions; every step of his missionary journeys and every word he writes to the communities of believers come directly from the Spirit. Indeed, the Holy Spirit played a crucial role in Paul’s own initiation to Christianity. It is the Holy Spirit that transformed Saul the persecutor of Christians into Paul, one of the most important figures in the early church and founder of many of the early Christian communities. In Paul’s letter to the Romans he writes that the Holy Spirit can help with prayer; ‘’we do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans’’ (NIV Romans 8:26-27). Furthermore, the Spirit also helps believers with spiritual problems, in his second letter to the Corinthians Paul writes that we ‘’groan, longing to be clothed…with our heavenly dwelling (NIV 2 Corinthians 5:2). Here Paul is saying that the Holy Spirit is there to help those with their spiritual lives and to help them get closer to God.
