Hitchcock has tried its best to invigorate the film with the spirit of the novel but he terribly failed. His film My Cousin Rachel has been a brilliant adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s novel. Apart from the dark ambience of the beautiful Manderley, the parallel between Rebecca and her pallid successor also constitutes the major elements in the novel. The inclination of the movie is more towards the light and romantic side except the tensed atmosphere in Manderley, to appeal to a larger number of audience. The protagonist of the play who is the nameless Mrs. De Winter creates tension in a larger part of the novel. It is only at the end that the truth is revealed. The smaller duration of the film and the lacking details of the inner torment of Mrs De Winter fails to create much tension in the film. The beauty estate of Manderley is shown in the movie, but the rose gardens and the picturesque vegetation around the great mansion was not visible in the movie. Rebecca reformed Manderley from a barren land to a mesmerizing estate which attracted people from every part of the country.
