Selena The movie “Selena” is based on a true story about Selena Quintanilla- Perez, a Texas born Tejano singer, who was on the rise of her career when tragedy struck and she was shot and killed by a close family friend and president of her fan club. The movie was written and directed by Gregory Nava in 1997. Selena was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena started her career at the age of 10, as lead singer in her family’s band, Selena y Los Dinos. Her father Abraham, produced the group while her brother was guitarist and her sister was the drummer. Selena Y Los Dinos started playing at weddings and clubs in Texas. As the movie begins, she is getting ready to perform at the Houston Astrodome, then the movie flashes back to Selena as a young girl and focuses on how the group started and the successes they reached. As Selena got older, more people were noticing her, she got crowds of people at concerts, and her records were having strong sales (Nava, Gregory).
As recordings continued to have strong sales , she won the Grammy Award “ Best Mexican-American Album” in 1993 for her album Live. Selena was soon known as “The Queen of Tejano Music.” Quickly after the release of Live, Selena started working on her first English-language album. Selena performed on stage like it was her last time ever to perform. She made everyone in the crowd feel special until it was all over. She was a role model to most Latina girls. Selena is very important in the Latino music industry, she made an impact since there wasn't many women in the industry who sang Tejano music. She showed that women can do anything a man can do since that was the controversy back when Selena started her singing career.
