Film: Selena

Description: Selena is a 1997 film that follows the life of Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla. The movie starts with Selena as a young girl and the passion she shows for music and singing since her childhood, this marks the beginning of her music career. Her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., is the one in charge of her career, he forms the band “Selena y Los Dinos”, group in which Selena is the main singer and her siblings and other friends are musicians. Analysis: The patterns of this movie are present when Selena and the band never give up. Selena was told that Tejano music was for men only, but she defied all those ideas and worked hard with determination positioning herself and her band as #1.

Interpretation: The movie shows how Selena with all of her talent, work, determination and support of her parents becomes a great and popular singer. Also, it shows how avarice and desperation can lead to take terrible decisions, which was the case of Yolanda Saldivar and her betrayal, she did not only steal money from Selena, but also took away her life.

Evaluation: When Selena travels to Mexico and finds out that she’s so acclaimed by the public is when I get to understand how Latinos support each other and how they have that power to turn a singer into a super star.

Engagement: I am Latina and I have watched this movie multiple times since I was very young; however, now that I’m older I analyze things differently and this movie makes me feel more proud of my Hispanic ancestry. Selena is an idol and an inspiration in the Hispanic community in the U.S. and in Latin America as well and we are proud of her because she worked so hard in order to earn that place and we will always mourn her absence in this

This documentary "Dreamworlds- Desire, Sex, and Power in music Videos" tries to explain how the popular culture influences contemporary music video and how this is affecting today’s culture. “Dreamworlds” insists that these narratives and cultural attitudes have shaped these music videos into sexualizing women, and filtering the identities of both men and women into “myths” about sexuality and gender. The subject group in these music videos tended to be mostly about women and how they are misrepresented and used in popular culture. Overall I agree with the film message that these music videos are misleading and only demonstrated with one point of view in which the audience can see through. For instance, the women are sexualized and presented as mere objects of for the video and men as well.…

In just one of many beautifully artistic decisions that make the film a polished creation, most of the musical numbers were taken at “magic hour”, making the colors both soft and intense, lending some beauty and romanticism to the mostly realistic Los Angeles settings. “La La Land” is a perfect mix of real and imaginative. It’s an awe-inspiring and touching romantic comedy. There is an artifice that lies in the brilliant colors, camera movements and the elegant wide-screen compositions. Although, In the songs and choreography, it has to be said that, with one or two exceptions, these are more competent than dazzling.…

during class. The entire film El Norte showed the life of two illegal immigrants who came to America, and how their jobs were lost and lives changed once people discovered they were not yet citizens. The movie differed from other illegal immigration stories because of the reason the two characters decided to risk a long journey to America. The Guatemalan government was taking children, women, and some men captive, and then bringing them to labor camps or killing them immediately. Rosa and Enrique would mostly likely be murdered if they remained in their community, which is why they went…

The movie did showcase a hispanic family and some of their traditions and beliefs but all young women who watch it can take away a sense of empowerment.
