On February 21, 2016 the Guthrie Theater did a production of the play Pericles written by William Shakespeare. As members of the audience found their seats, soft music began to play and the light became low. Within minutes the entire theater had become completely silent. For about the next four hours the audience was captivated by the emotion, excitement, and humor of a story about one man’s incredible life journey. At its core, the Pericles displays the trials and triumphs of the human experience using unique acting design methods that bring Shakespeare’s story and the interpretations of the director to life, conveying and uplifting message of hope to the audience. As the play opens, the audience is introduced to the main character Pericles Prince if Tyre. The opening scene occurs at the palace of King Antiochus where the prince hopes to ask the king for his daughter hand in marriage. However, Pericles discovers that the King was sleeping with his own daughter. As a result, King Antiochus resolves to kill Pericles to keep his secret safe. For example, the two fathers in the play, Thaisa’s doting father Simonides and King Antiochus, were played by the same actor. This method allowed the play to consists of a relatively small cast. Amazingly, the transitions between these two opposite characters were seamless. Furthermore, the doubling possessed a symbolic function depicting the good and the evil components of humanity. In addition, the actor’s expressions were highly communicative. Because the language of the play was often difficult to understand, the audience had to pay attention to the reactions of the character in order to understand what was happing in the scene.
