To me it seems like the author of the novel The Awakening, Kate Chopin, has a lot things in common with her life and the life of Edna Pontellier of the story. They are many different examples of the same things occurring in Chopin’s life and in Edna’s. Then from some of my research and some of the things that go on in the story it leaves me pretty curious on how much of the story Chopin based on previous life experiences. Also, from some of my research I learned that there is a lot of different characters in the story of people that Kate met in real life. I found out that there is a lot more in common between Chopin’s life and what happens to Edna, now I know a lot more and I feel like I understand more …show more content…
There is a lot of things that actually occur in the life of Kate Chopin that she uses in the story of The Awakening. To me I think that Edna is most representative of Chopin, although it is said this is said to be based on a story of a popular New Orleans girl. I believe that Chopin uses a lot of her own life into the mix and it is pretty clear. For starters, in the novel The Awakening Edna has two affairs one with a man named Robert and one with a man named Alcee. Then in the life of Chopin it is said that she had an affair with a man after her husband passed (The Kate Chopin International Society). It talks about both the affairs but the affair with Robert was a lot more serious and she was only with Alcee for a short time. For one in the story Edna is dominated by her husband Leonce and she is expected to be a stay at home wife like every other women and take care of the house and kids. This is demonstrated perfectly at the very beginning when Leonce says “You are burnt beyond recognition," he added, looking at his wife as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property which has suffered some damage.”(2) However, in Chopin’s real marriage I found out that she was actually very free from her husband and he was very lenient on what she did and what she could do (The Kate Chopin International Society). So when i found out how her real marriage was i wonder that if maybe she wanted a typical marriage from back in that time and maybe Edna’s marriage was Chopin trying to feel like what it was like to be in that type of marriage. Also I found in my research, that Chopin was not a very accepted author until a pretty long time after she died (The Kate Chopin International Society). I can compare this to Edna in the story struggling to become an artist and striving for that, so maybe Edna was Chopin trying to say how hard it was to be accepted as an artist in those times. Not many people even gave Edna much of a chance if being an artist, "Painting!" laughed Edna. "I am becoming an artist. Think of
