The Parallels and Distinctions of Bean and Ender Bean and Ender have many similarities that set them apart from their peers in times of peril. Their intelligence made them the most promising weapon in the war against the buggers, rating highest among the smartest children in the world. This is surprising on account of the dissimilarities of their lifestyles before they went to battle school. However, before and during battle school Bean and Ender had to cope with being small. Ender and Bean were both prodigies in their time, but ironically they had completely different personalities. Bean and Ender hated their inadequate height but never let it get to them, or drag them down. Ender and Bean were both small and brilliant, but those were the only characteristics they shared. For instance, Bean was cold-hearted and cared about little, while Ender was compassionate. Bean had always had help from others, even in Rotterdam, where his family was his only protection. Sister Carlotta also helped him get out of the streets and into Battle School. Ender believed to his core that no one would ever help him. Colonel Graff set up the system to give Ender the impression that no one would ever come to his rescue. Because of this, Ender relied only on himself. When the children were fighting the war against the buggers, Bean along with everyone else wanted Ender to lead. Ironically, Ender didn't want to be used; he didn't want to kill the billions of buggers that was required in order to win. However, the way Bean and Ender thought is what separated them most. Bean chose whatever path had the best outcome for Bean. He thought only for himself. But Ender cared about people, and they loved him for it. These were the acute differences that probably decided who was to command. Bean and Ender have similarities, but it would be inaccurate to say that these similarities make them the same. Their distinctions are what kept them surviving through the hard times, and
