Elizabethan Era Sports

The Elizabethan Era was a time of many popular skilled sports. The Elizabethan era was from 1558-1603. There were a numerous amount of sports and activities people could participate in. Sports gained popularity immensely during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. All social classes, genders, and ages could play. Some sports were played individually while others were played with a team. Sports were used as a pastime for some people, and others used it as skill training. There were many popular sports during the Elizabethan Era including archery, fencing, and bear and bull baiting. During the Elizabethan Era, archery was played by many Elizabethans. Archery was a prominent sport that was played by many, “Elizabethans of this era was also known for their prowess on various sporting games. Archery was one popular sporting game” (“Games People play during Elizabethan Era”). Elizabethans were very skilled in playing competitive games. Men participated in archery contests because it was an individual sport. Archery was a skill that the majority of the population had. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, fencing was a skill that many nobles had, “Skill in Fencing during the Elizabethan Era was a requirement of all Upper class Nobility. The different types of swords ranged from the smallest Broadsword measuring from 30 inches to the Greatswords which measured up to 72 inches. The weight of swords used during this era are usually presumed to be a lot heavier than they actually” (Alchin). Everyone from the upper class nobility were skilled in fencing. Fencing was used as a self-defense skill. Also, the swords used varied in many different sizes, weights, and shapes. The different use of swords made the game very unique.
