Some inmates with mental disorders can be classified as an individual that is danger to himself or others. Mental ill individuals are at risk of suicide and don’t have the ability of taking care of their personal needs. Usually homeless individuals do not admit that they are in the need for mental treatment and hope the effects will simply go away. Psychiatric Hospitalization treatment should be taken in consideration when the individuals threats of homicide, suicide, or psychotic behavior. As Handlon states, “On admission, the psychiatrists has 24 hours to conduct a mental status exam on the patient to determine if the person indeed, meets the criteria to continue” (2). The results would be send to the judge at the county courthouse. Based on the findings, the judge makes the decision, if the individual needs psychiatric hospitalization. Psychiatric hospitalization has been considered an effective treatment for individuals with mental disorder, therefore the court system should consider implementing it on mental ill individuals who are unable to stand …show more content…
It is hard for a mental ill individual to trust others. Inmates have difficulties coping with social norms. For instance, Tom assaulted his cellmate in prison and was segregated in solitary confinement. Tom might begin to show symptoms of depression due to his isolation. In this case, a psychotherapist would provide the inmate with a puzzle only if, Tom shows good behavior while being held in solitary confinement. As Morgan stated, “This helped mentally ill inmates have something to focus on and placated inmates with behavioral problems," (1). Psychotherapy would help inmates and individuals with aggressive and fatigue behavior by having a psychotherapist talk to the individual. Psychotherapy would allow the individual to change his or her overall behavior. As a result, Psychotherapist can help individuals cope to social norms. The court system should take psychotherapy into consideration for individuals with mental ill disorders. Mental ill disorders is a problematic issue that is affecting individuals across the United States. Mental illness contribute to problems in the criminal justice system. The court system should take into consideration the various treatments that can be used for individuals with mental disorder. The money for these treatments should be retrieved from taxpayers and should minimize offenders from reoffending. The court system objective of rehabilitation, will efficiently work
