The effectiveness of Antimicrobial agents against Microorganisms
Population of microorganisms or growth are killed and/or inhibited by natural or synthetic chemical antimicrobial controls (Madigan, et al 2012). Antimicrobial agents are grouped according to their efficacy against microorganisms. Bactericidal that kill and bacteriostatic prevent and/or reduce growth (Madigan et al, 2012).
Harmful pathogens are targeted with different antimicrobial agents according to their toxicity in order to sufficiently eliminate them. Such agents include disinfectants, Antiseptic, and Antibiotics. Microorganisms are prevented, killed and eliminated from living tissue and on inanimate objects through application of disinfectants and antiseptics agents (Willey, el at, 2011). Healthcare settings regularly use disinfectants like ethanol together with other detergents to sanitise work areas which are normally used heavily like floors, worktops and tables to eliminate and control microorganisms. Food businesses also use disinfectants to prevent food contamination. There are other types of disinfectants like sanitisers specially used to disinfect medical equipment for surgery, dentistry and other use in the hospital environments given the fact that such places normally harbour other microorganisms that if left untreated and/or eliminated would make procedures very risky and dangerous.
