Even this basic description of the adolescent makes it clear that this time period requires special response on the part of schools. The middle school was created to respond to these needs. The key to successfully educating this group is to be developmentally responsive to all of their incredibly variable needs. It is not enough to simply blanket every student with knowledge, educators must be prepared to shift plans and adapt to any situation. This responsibility falls to all staff members within a middle school in order to be as effective as possible.
Middle schools must also provide a challenge to students. Challenge pushes students to achievement and allows for the expansion of knowledge. Placidity does nothing to educate anyone; challenge garners interest and a longing for knowledge. Seeking new heights is the ultimate goal of any education and it cannot be ignored.
