Middle School Stereotypes

Decent Essays
Middle school is an inevitable phase of many of our lives. It is also a very memorable time- for both good and bad reasons. Yet, we all somehow manage to strive through no matter how tough the year gets. For me, at first, none of the typical horrifying middle school stereotypes fit how my sixth grade year was going. I had plenty of friends, understood my classes, and I didn’t appear to be too awkward. So I enclosed myself in the comfort of a simple life and convinced myself that I was one of the lucky few that had it pretty easy. However, the comfort zone I had constructed was butchered following the announcement of my dad’s relocation from Georgia to Kentucky. I was soon hit with a new school, new friends, and new state all within a matter

After almost one-hundred and eighty days, the 2015-2016 school year is approaching an end. So far, I have concluded that middle school is basically like building a house. Before middle school started, in fifth grade, the house only had the boards and the main skeleton of the whole structure. All of the basics are learned in elementary school: learning how to read, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, fractions, the founding of America,, etcetera, but by the time students reach sixth grade, new knowledge builds onto what is already known. Letters are added into the familiar math equations; stories are written with all of the reading and grammar knowledge; unfamiliar people, wars, and awakenings add onto the history of America.…

Middle school can be an odd and rough time for kids, as they change from being sheltered youth to responsible young adults. I failed miserably at handling that transition. The classes taught in middle school were supposed to be easy, especially now that I look in retrospect. Yet, I regularly brought home B’s and low A’s, at best, on my report card. I had barely challenged myself in middle school, if at all.…

Math Morals By Kelly Anne “Brrrrrrring,” went the school bell. The crisp air on the playground felt amazing. I didn’t want to go inside. I completed this assignment with an eight year old boy, who is currently in the second grade. He was a bit apprehensive about completing the organization of pictures in chronological order and the interview with me at first, but was put at ease when I told him that this was not a test on his part, and that guessing or saying “I don’t know” was okay. He did quite well on the ordering of pictures, just incorrectly putting the Civil War picture after the first Thanksgiving picture, which in my opinion were also the hardest of the bunch because the topics and time periods seem to relate more than any other pictures that I chose for him to organize. In regards to the interview, he seemed to do well on or relate to questions that he could personally…

The article also stated that we don't have to work for anything, and that everything is just “handed to us on a silver platter”. This is a very biased comment that obviously was not well researched at all. Nowadays, it is harder than ever for young people like me to get a job after leaving school, thanks in part to the teenage stereotype articles like this are pushing forwards. Unless we have a college degree, employers often see teenagers as lazy, spoiled and unskilled, leading them to dismiss us as being unqualified for the job. This doesn't help when, thanks to high unemployment, teenagers with very little job experience are now competing with adults for the same jobs.…

Middle school was hard for me not because of the awkward phases everyone goes through during that time, although I did have a fair share of those, it was because during that time I was bullied by my parents to act more feminine and appropriate to my gender. Growing up with mostly boys as my playmates I didn’t turn out as feminine as society would’ve liked, don’t get me wrong I did like wearing dresses and playing with baby dolls form time to time however my family seemed to find a problem with my behavior, I didn’t act appropriately as a female, according to them at least. I would run around with my friends playing in the dirty streets instead of helping my mother in the kitchen or sitting idly during family gatherings. This continued until…

Picture a freshman boy with glasses, straight posture, and overalls walking down the hallway inside his high school. There's no doubt that everyone in school will assume the boy is a nerd with straight As who has no friends because of his appearance. A second example would be a varsity cheerleader, everyone assumes that she is sassy, loud, and mean not knowing the person she truly is. Society often labels people with stereotypes even though they don’t take the time to actually get to know this person.
