In this paper Peter King explores the link between urbanisation and murder rates in England and Wales 1780-1850 and the debate surrounding it. The traditional view, made by sociologists, links large cities with lethal violence, though this has been challenged by historians claim murder rates have been negatively correlated with urbanisation. King makes his view clear throughout, that homicide rates are higher in cities on a whole. The article questions this “new consensus” by re-examining the evidence.…
In Elijah Anderson’s The Cosmopolitan Canopy, he delves into the diverse city of Philadelphia and observes how people of different ethnicities and backgrounds experience and interact with each other, as well as the city itself. Many areas of the city are segregated, whether it be by socioeconomic status, race, or background. However, within the city, there are many areas of harmony. Elijah Anderson calls these pockets, “cosmopolitan canopies”. A cosmopolitan canopy is viewed as public space in every sense of the word, a place that is free from individual claim and a hub for civility and inclusion.…
In Magical Urbanism, Mike Davis illustrates the growing influence of Latinos in reshaping and redefining urban spaces. Furthermore, David provides a glimpse at the reality experienced by many immigrants in the West Coast and the reaction of the natives that coexist with them in those spaces. While reading this, I thought of how far-removed my own experience as a Latina in the DMV area was from those depicted in the book. I could not, for example, relate the experiences of those Latinos living in the border having to deal with racial profiling by the local police, Border Patrol, and even the DEA (pg. 43). The themes that did resonate with my experience were those found in the chapters, “Buscando América” and “Disabling Spanish.”…
Urbanism in the United States was impossible to avoid for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons was the new opportunities the city had to offer many individuals because of the growing development of the city. Urbanism for instance, brought many new opportunities from employment, lifestyle, and changes to the city. A new experience many people had never seen before or had access to. Urbanism aside from all the different opportunities it brought to the city with the new developments created a rapid expansion in population with the growth of home developments, rural places, and new job developments.…
The earth 's climate is dynamic and always changing through a natural cycle. Although both natural causes and human activities causes the climate what the world is more worried about is that the changes that are occurring today have been speeded up because of man 's activities. A growing population has brought nationwide recognition to Los Angeles and the surrounding area, but it has also brought increasing environmental problems, including water shortages and pollution and air pollution. Also, the city is susceptible to variable precipitation because of its geographic location, which means there are unpredictable droughts, and the dense population contributes to storm water pollution of local bodies of water.…
Parks were introduced as an escape to nature and psychological relief. The Progressives' concern for this idea is displayed best by the town of Chicago, which spent over $30 million on the ideals of a Progressive for the health of the city. Zoning regulations were created against the slumlords. Town authorities concentrated on sewage improvement and went after air pollution as doctors spoke out on the adverse effects of smoke for people's health.…
Many cities within the United States have become sanctuary city. Sanctuary city has a policy that protect undocumented immigrants from being punished for violating solely the immigration laws. The administration of the sanctuary city sees a need for protection to those people who came to the United States to escape from the cruel condition they are facing in their home countries. Our new president, Donald Trump, is opposing to the existence of these kind of city. In his presidential debate on the immigration policy, he says that he would cut off federal funding for every city that is considered sanctuary.…

The City and the Soul The Republic written by Plato in Socratic dialogue is one of the earliest text concerning the subject of justice and forms of government. In the text, Socrates and other Athenians debate on the true meaning of justice. After establishing the premises, Socrates concludes his arguments by praising aristocracy as the best form of government because it is ruled by rational philosopher kings who are just, and critique other forms of government, especially democracy because the desire nature of the human soul rules the city. Today, both forms of government still exist, but democracy seems to be the ideal form of government in the western civilization. Socrates is wrong with his conclusion that aristocracy exceeds democracy because reason exceeds appetite in an aristocracy.…
In essence, it is important to remember global origins to achieve community action. This was one of the earliest realizations of the Japanese Americans, for they began in 1986 to try and preserve part of Little Tokyo through community action. It was the Little Tokyo Community Development Advisory Committee that campaigned and established Little Tokyo’s historical district on East First Street. Some of the oldest Japanese American businesses in the country are on First Street, and so the rich culture plays a big role in establishing a sense of community in Little Tokyo. Being in New York City itself was all too surreal, like a dream come true. Buildings raced each other in a quest to touch the soft blue sky and people littered the streets and sidewalks. Life there was upbeat and fast-paced and everyone and everything was moving, but then you crossed into Central Park. Crossing the sidewalk into the large park was like crossing the border into another world.…
One of the most important pioneers for this concept was Arturo Soria y Mata; he was an urban planner from Spain. His concept first appearance was in an article in Madrid famous journal of the time, where Soria tackles the municipal policies of planning, advising a radical measure for the future planning of Madrid. The Linear City concept had as principal idea one strip of 500 meters wide, the long of the strip would be the necessary, by necessary we mean it could be as long as the city would require. In the center of this strip, the main actor would be the train line and tranvia. Main pipes for water, gas, sewage, electricity etc.…
Introduction: The world is urbanizing rapidly; the present population living in urban areas is 54%. The more urban an area, the more concretized it is. There is significant temperature differences between city centers and their surrounding countryside and surface temperatures can be much greater in high density suburbs compared to low-density suburbs; the reason being concretization.…
