Eco-Feminism is a conceptual idea in a direct response due to Androcentrism a concept that places man as the centric structure and leaves women and the environment under forms of oppression. Androcentrism originated in the 16th century when mass colonization and European exploration occurred in which not only exploited Atlantic cultures, but also environments spanning across the Atlantic. Furthermore, women and environment were placed below man and were placed out of the centric structure and into the peripheral.

The Black Atlantic is an area commonly known for its history of exploitation. The Black Atlantic “represents the history of the movements of people of African descent from Africa to Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas and provides a lens through which to view the ways that ideas about nationality and identity were formed” (The Black Atlantic Paul Gilroy). The black Atlantic was a culture born out of the Atlantic slave trade and European colonization. In the book becoming African in America, writer James Sidbury describes the ‘first generation’ of Africans in the Atlantic as “Political Activist working within the emerging antislavery movement in England and North America during the 1780s and 1790s (Becoming Africa in America Page 80.) In his book, the black Atlantic, Gilroy is attempting to state that western civilization has become gripped in a bind between racial, terror and reason. In order to solve the issues that have afflicted the west, we utilize the same level of resistance the Black Atlantic people have shown towards the bind. Ultimately, we can learn from James Sudbury and Gilroy’s writing that by advocating for Eco-Feminism, we can lift Eco-Feminism out of the Peripheral and bring attention to the center, just as Africans in the 1780s and 1790s brought the issue of slavery from the peripheral and into the …show more content…
Feminism focuses on primarily women and men in which aims to put men and women on the same ground while Eco-Feminism intends to eliminate gender discrimination of women due to generalization of the environment and therefore, promote environmental well-being through the liberation of gender discrimination. Writer Val Plumwood argues that we have colonized the environment through use of five characteristics Instrumentation, Incorporation, Homogeneralization and Backgrounding. She also states we can free the environment through use of the liberatory model in which utilizes Eco-Philosophy and Eco-Politics. Furthermore, a culture known for its exploitation, the Black Atlantic, born out of the Atlantic slave trade, has brought attention to the center in the past due to opposition to slavery by prominent political activist in the 1780s and 1790s.
