Conflict theory originates from the idea of life and the social system being positive. (Durkin & Carrothers,2015) This perspective isn’t much for explaining stability as it is for pinpointing social change. Today in our modern society you can see examples of this statement. The never-ending tables and graphs you see depicting the wealthy, ruling class’ grasp on society and the filling of their pockets. Marx saw this and identified that the ruling class was using its growing power to control elements of society. (Durkin & Carrothers,2015) Also, he saw the differences in the two classes of capitalism the “bourgeoisie” and the “proletariat”. (Durkin & Carrothers,2015) He noted that the wealthy use forms of “false consciousness” to give meaning to the working-class lives and steering them away from the realization of their own misery’s. (Durkin & Carrothers,2015) These false conscious ideas brought on by the dominate class would eventually be noticed by lower members of society and fail in the eyes of Marx leading the fall of capitalism. Marx’s though that it would happen saying that people of the system must acknowledge the deception of its subsistence. (Thomas, 2013) The proletariat would see through these forced ideas of the powerful and revolt against a rigged system in turn opting for a more socialist or communist approach. (Durkin & Carrothers,2015) What amazes me is that Karl Marx saw this so many years ago and how it relates to today. With today’s society working harder for less pay, less benefits, and higher taxes you can start to see where the institution of capitalism is starting to falter like Marx said. Furthermore, an example of society beginning to see through forms of false consciousness and the grasp of society the elite group has is the publics awaking to false media. Individuals are turning to more objective forms of media and fact checking websites seeing how mainstream news is contorting the crucial facts, suppressing them to align with what the ruling class wants them to see.
