Documentary Analysis: The Funk Brothers

Decent Essays
The purpose of this film is to inform and educate the audience about their music group and it's history. This film being a documentary, narration is used all throughout the film. The narrator gives descriptions and details to convey the story and give a short excerpt on what is going to be talked about next in the film. The narrator of the whole film talks in third person because he was not involved in what happened, he talks about other people. When the artists, who were involved in The Funk Brothers, narrate their stories they talk in first person, past tense. Many different artists narrate and speak out about what their lives were like during that time and the action that had happened. This creates a sense of reliability towards the audience

The connections that one makes with the real or imagined landscapes reveals the need for individuals and society to feel a sense of belonging and unity. Melissa Harrison’s novel, Clay and the Funk Brothers’ short film, Looms represents this view of people and landscapes being inextricably linked. The novel, Clay explores how TC visits the park and secret garden as it is a platform for escapism and refuge. This need for escapism is stimulated by his fractured relationship with his mother, causing him to lack a sense of inclusion. Contrastingly, Looms depicts a farmer who contemplates between selling his farm or keeping it as it is filled with memories of his family.…

The movie “Arranged” is a drama-induced film with a powerful message of integrity that religious women uphold. Arranged is a film that displays traditions that are very important in a religious household, such as marriage. Coming from two completely different traditions, Rochel, an orthodox Jew, and Nasira, a dominant Muslim, come to realize that their process for marriage is very similar. I chose to do this assignment rather than the bus ride because once I read what the movie was about, I began to be very interested in learning how the process of marriage works in other religions besides my own. I recently got engaged so I was looking forward to comparing the processes from the two women in the story with my own experiences since I am looking…

Before watching the documentary, I believed that the blues was nothing more than old genre of music. I was oblivious toward the fact that the blues had made such an impact on modern day music and that it was the foundation from which many of my favorite genres stemmed from. A topic that I specifically found interesting was that this very special genre of music, a genre that had been brought out of slavery and the black struggle had been abandoned by its demographic, the black community. During this time period, the early sixties, blacks had generally turned their favoritism toward Motown and Jazz, leaving the blues behind. What had been created to bring ease to the minds of blacks was taken by young white people whom I’d like to refer to as…

Funk music as an expression brought with it a newly packaged music that was capable of fully embracing both the performers’ and audiences energies. Funk emphasized dancing and how it further expressed implicit meanings not always explicitly understood through the lyrics. Funk music opened the door for a particular subculture, black youth, to take their form of dance expression and broadcast it across the United States through the culturally important program Soul Train. In particular, the importance of individual, creative dance broke the mold of many of the dancing trends in music that preceded it. This important aspect of musical expression transcended the era of funk and to this day dancing is still just as important in the world of music…
