DNA transcription is a method that involves transcribing genetic information from DNA to RNA. The transcribed DNA message or the RNA transcript makes proteins. DNA is held in the nucleus of our cells. It rules our cellular activity by coding for the production of proteins. The information in DNA is not directly changed into proteins but is first copied into RNA. This is so the information within the DNA does not become ruined.
DNA is made up of four nucleotide bases, which are adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). These nucleotide bases are paired together, adenine pairs with thymine and cytosine pairs with guanine to give DNA its double helical shape. This is base pairing. Nucleotide base sequences are instructions for protein synthesis.
There are 3 main steps to DNA transcription. Step one RNA polymerase binds to DNA. DNA is transcribed by an enzyme called RNA polymerase specific nucleotide sequences tell RNA polymerase where to start and end. RNA polymerase attached to the DNA at a specific area which is the promoter region. Step two is Elongation. This is where specific proteins called transcription factors unwind the DNA strand and let the RNA polymerase transcribe one strand of DNA into a single strand RNA polymer called the messenger RNA (mRNA).
