The purpose of this particular experiment is to see what DNA looks like on a macroscopic scale by extracting DNA from peas. According to the Exploring Creation With Biology 2nd Edition, DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid, which is necessary to meet the four crieteria for life. DNA preforms many functions throughout an organism, but its main purpose lies in telling the cell which proteins to make (Wile, Durnell). Explore DNA elaborated on the importance of DNA by saying: DNA holds the code for proteins, which are complex molecules that do huge amounts of work around our body (Murnaghan) . Synonym also added more detail on the subject of DNA and proteins in this statement: The work of each cell is done by proteins, so one …show more content…
This made extracting the DNA easier because it opened the cells and the contents were realesed into the liquid. When the meat tenderizer had been added to the solution it broke down the proteins that coated the DNA using enzymes. This process exposed the DNA strands so they would be easier to see. And lastly, when the rubbing alcohol was added to the solution it attracted the peas' DNA making it more visible to the human eye. The experiment could have been improved by using a strainer with smaller holes so that chunks of the unblended peas would not have fallen into the mixture. Letting the solution sit longer with dish soap in it would have opened all the cells which would reveal more DNA later on. After viewing the DNA with a naked human eye, a microscope could have been used to see the DNA in more detail. This experiment reveals the abundnace of DNA in a human body. If many strands of DNA were found in 1/2 cup of peas, then how many more would be found in a human body! The jobs of DNA in a human is apparently extremely important and understanding DNA allows one an abundant amount of information in the feild of
