Social Factors Influencing Gene Expression

Improved Essays
DNA gives cells the potential for specific behavior, but this potential will only be realized if the gene is expressed. A gene is expressed if the DNA is transcribed into RNA and then converted into a protein. These proteins can have many different effects on the cell, such as metabolism or neurotransmission. We are now able to tell which specific genes are expressed at a particular time. Gene expression is uncommon, however, with no transcription and only the potential for a behavior as a result. It is now understood that social factors can influence gene expression. One of the first relationships looked at was that of social stress and isolation and how they relate to the onset and progression of disease, particularly viruses. One of the earliest studies looked at white blood cells from healthy older adults who differed in their feelings of social connectedness. Genes supporting inflammation were up-regulated, genes involved in the response to viral infections were down-regulated, and genes involved in the production of antibodies were down-regulated. This explains why lonely people are more susceptible to inflammation-driven cardiovascular diseases and have poorer responses to viral infections. Until recently, it was unknown why the glucocorticoid receptors were …show more content…
For example, social stress increases nerve growth factor gene expression, which increases the growth of sympathetic nervous system neural fibers in the lymph node tissues that structure immune responses. At a later time, when stress is experienced again, more neurotransmitters will be released in the lymph nodes because of the increased number of neural fibers, which is a direct consequence of the social factor stress from the earlier time. The immune system responds more poorly to a viral infection as a result. This is just one example of how the environment is a crucial part of our gene expression and resulting

According to the book the concept of gene-environment correlation is, “our genes influence the environments to which we are exposed” (Berk 55). The book breaks it down into what is experienced in earlier and older ages. At the time of early ages, two types of gene-environment correlation types exist, passive and evocative correlation. At older ages, active correlation is dominant as the child has more freedom. I will now apply this concept to the scenario given.…

And consequently, to understand gene expression is to understand why these mutations can have such grave effects on an individual. For DNA to direct cellular processes, it must be transcribed and translated, The AP Biology Curriculum Framework explains. It goes on to say that “the products of transcription and translation play an important role in determining metabolism, i.e. cellular activities and phenotypes.” So if “changes in a nucleotide sequence, if present in a protein-coding region, can change the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide” (AP Biology Curriculum Framework, p. 37), changes to these essential proteins prevents cellular activities from being performed. The field of gene therapy began due to knowing about mutations and their effects on gene expression.…

The Basics of Gene Expression and Control Genetics is a very diverse field of science, because it encompasses so many aspects of not only what happens inside organisms, but also how offspring relate to parents and ancestors and many other processes. Although every bit of genetics is important, many things in an organism would not be possible without the expression of genes. Through expressions of genes, organisms provide for themselves and "fulfill" what is the basis of their genetic possibility. These processes of transcriptional gene control, translational gene control, and post-translational gene control helps make key components that help an organism function in many ways.…

The immune system is our bodies system that protects us from viruses and other illnesses. Our immune system and central nervous system are linked by the bodies lymphocytes; the white blood cells that fight viruses (Hockenbury, Nolan & Hockenbury 2015). There is a continuous relationship between the nervous, immune and endocrine systems, so if one is affected like by stress, the others will be as…

While noticed, people often turn a blind eye to stress themselves or to other’s normalizing extreme amounts of stress which negatively impacts quality of many others including ourselves. In an article titled “Stress in everyday life and its management” stress is broken down into 4 separate sources. The first being the environment around the person, the environment around someone dictates and demand for the person to change or adapt to their surroundings. One of the most obvious examples of this can be found in military camps were new recruits are placed in an area that is extremely stressful in order to mold the person to become more adept to the new way of life. The second source covered by the article are social stressors, which occur from demands in different and specific social roles such as parenting.…

Stress can impact a person's psychological wellbeing such as their memory. The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus are in charge of working and long-term memory respectively. Stress often hinders their functioning and long-term stress can eventuate in cell death. Stress affects how people interpret ambiguous symptoms.…

Stressed lifestyle and personality are some of the psychological factors that influence health and behaviour in our lives. However, our response to stressors determines our ability to control and manage or develop illness out of the stress. “Stress is experienced when a person’s perceived environmental, social, and physical demands exceed their perceived ability to cope, particularly when these demands are seen as endangering the person’s well-being in some way” (Cardwell & Flanagan, 2012). Walter Cannon’s (1932) fight or flight response elaborates the correlation between arousal and stress as due to the survival mechanisms that evolve in homosepian. According to Sarafino stress comprises of two components: the stressors, stimuli that make…

Environment impact stress in a lot of ways for example when you have stress and then you see green trees and smell fresh air all this things help in decreasing stress but on the other hand when you see a polluted environment that increases your stress Physical impacts: - Low energy - muscular tension and pain - Headaches - Nervousness and shaking, ringing in the ear, cold or sweaty hands and…

Stress is a growing public health concern in Canada, affecting individuals of all ages, genders and circumstances both mentally and physically. From a physicist’s perspective, the term ‘stress’ is defined as an applied force or pressure exerted onto a body (). However, in terms of psychology, stress is looked upon as the reaction or response to a demanding environmental stimulus that disrupts and threatens an organism’s mental or physical equilibrium ().Weather stressors are associated with ostensible insalubrious consequences which are solely dependent on how the organism appraises it or how the mind construes them. However, the inability of an individual to successfully cope with stress leads to a cascade of direct and indirect links to physiological…

DNA is our genetic code, it is permanent and unchangeable. Epigenetics are the mechanisms that influence DNA, it is the device that inhibits or increases our gene expression. Epigenetics can be influenced by many factors, for example nutrition and stress. Although the actual makeup of our genetic code isn’t changed by these factors, the extent to which the genes are expressed can be (Rettner, 2013). Epigeneticist Moshe Szyf highlighted the ways in which different behaviors can influence genetics in his TedTalk, How Early Life Experience is Written into DNA.…
