Question 1: Coming from a Christian perspective, I do not think that it is ever okay to be dishonest as a social worker, or as a person in general. However, I can see why a social worker would be dishonest if he or she thought the client would have difficulty handling the truth about a prognosis or progress in treatment. If I were ever in this situation, it would still be important to me that I would be honest with what is happening, because people deserve the right to know what is going on in their own life. If I were the person looking at the advertisement, I would want to know why it is so controversial and I would want to know the risks and benefits of using this treatment approach. I would take a step back from my professional role and ask myself what I would want to know about this treatment and then use that information to publicize it. From a Christian perspective, I should not be selfish in the advertising, only thinking about getting business or the simplicity of only posting positive comments on the approach. Social workers should pay attention to different signs among their colleagues about distress relating to: “personal problems, psychosocial distress, legal problems, substance abuse, or mental health difficulties” (Reamer 2006, p. 204). I would also provide education on what the problems of impairment can create for social workers. If social workers cannot take care of themselves, they cannot take care of their clients. I would provide research that has been conducted in the past in regards to the effects of impairment on social workers. At the staff meeting, I would encourage the social workers to seek out help if they are aware that they are becoming incompetent in their work. It would be beneficial for me to “enhance social workers’ awareness of impairment risks, common warning signs, and constructive ways to respond to impairment” (122).
