Discrimination In Slavery

Decent Essays
Slavery developed by the blacks being different from the white servants, they were treated differently and in fact were slaves. Slavery developed quickly and became a habit, which developed others, who were not slaves, to believe they were Superior. Over the years, blacks were treated differently thus creating racism.

In addition, the main drive behind slavery can be attributed to the decisions made by the settlers during the 1600s. While historical forces made forced labor a desirable option, racism was not a normal response to them. The insecurities that the settlers felt led them to discriminate against black slaves, only because they were an easy target. Even though South Africa practiced slavery, there was not the same outcome in prejudice

This America was created on equality, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, wasn’t it? Well at least that is what is stated in the “Declaration of Independence” which was created in 1776. Equality is the state of being equal, whether it is included in rights, status, or opportunity it symbolizes that two or more things are no different than each other. Well why would our founding fathers include such a robust term, that being equality, into the most important document within this America if it would not apply to all that shall reside! All men were not created equal as the declaration stated because some men were forced to be slaves. “They are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights,”…

Within the book, it is shown that there are inequalities between economic class, race, and gender, each expressing superiorities and inferiorities. These disparities contribute to the idea that the Declaration of Independence should have clarified “all men are created equal,” in the fact that it meant wealthy, white men.…

The colonists had to be convinced that this type of labor was superior to what they already had, which began to take root as the immigration of indentured servants slowed as more were choosing to go to other colonies, such as Pennsylvania. Eventually, as the ownership of slaves became more and more appealing to the planters in the Chesapeake region, the colonists needed to find a way to justify their actions. As the English had always viewed outside peoples, such as the Irish and Native Americans, with incredible disdain, they put that view upon the Africans in a way to justify their enslavement of them. While “race” was not a fully-developed concept in the seventeenth century, the English viewed the Africans as being barbaric and inherently inferior, thus justifying their enslavement. So, while racial prejudice was not the sole factor in the rise of slavery in the English colonies, it was very influential once the opportunity for it to exist…

African slaves came from a variety of nations and spoke many different languages. Thus, making it hard to communicate in order to organize and rebel against their masters. Hence, making it a profitable labor system used by colonists. But, many of the Africans kept many of their customs and beliefs from their homelands during their enslaved lives. These kinship customs then led to the basis of African-American family culture. This created a source of strength for separated families, but, it also led in a way to the growth of slavery. Enslaved men and women would later be able to be married and have children, unfortunately, the slave codes said that slave status passed from slave mothers to their children. To such a degree, buying both men and women would give planters a self-reproducing labor force, just like that, there was a increase of slaves in the Southern colonies. The reason that slavery developed was because of social racism. Blacks and all people from Africa were considered to be socially inferior by whites. They claimed biological differences existed between races and thought that they are just another piece of property. Slaves were initially prevented from marrying or forming families on plantations in America. Then, many plantation owners discovered that they would not have to import more slaves from overseas. This is because slaves would reproduce and those children would be slaves too. Over time, there was a definitive link between slave status and black skin was forged in American minds. By late seventeenth-century, close to two hundred fifty thousand enslaved Africans in America; about eighty-five percent lived in the Southern Colonies and made up forty percent of the population of the South. Thus, slavery grew due to social factors such as superiority because in this period it was socially acceptable in the southern…

Even though we were able to abolish slavery, racism is still a major issue in our country. Slavery started in the Americas for people to get free labor done in plantations, haciendas (large farms or estates), or mines. During the beginnings of slavery in the Americas, many slaves resisted by running away. Often these “maroons” (runaway slaves) formed colonies with native Americans. In order to prevent all these escapes and rebellions, the Spanish government decided to pass slave codes. These laws were meant to allow slaves some basic rights, but most were misused to punish slaves and keep them in bondage. Overtime, people started to associate slavery with black Africans, since they were the best fit and most common slaves. It was not long before dark skin became a sign of inferiority, which led to racism. The slave trade lasted nearly four hundred years from 1500s to the mid-1800s. All of this contact between Africa and the Americas formed a part of the Columbian Exchange, since Africans brought a vast knowledge of both farming and raising livestock.…

Slavery was one of the biggest issues in the United States. Once the Civil War and Reconstruction Era ended in 1865 the thirteenth amendment was created to free slaves. All former slaves moved on to do their separate things. Some reunited with their families and moved north, while others stayed close to their previous owners who provided sanctuary. African American population patterns can be traced using maps published in the atlases created by the U. S. Census Bureau for each census taken from 1870 to 1920. The largest concentrations were in Maryland, Virginia, and the southeastern states.…

This was another aspect that made the book important second to the economic background of slavery. The development of racism came about as a means of isolating the African community from the ruling and dominant white. One advantage that aided in the selection of Africans as a source of slavery was solely based on their inability to blend in due to their skin color. Their status as slaves and their skin color then lead to the discrimination of the African people in the American and Caribbean plantations. As they were deemed ‘disposable,’ the development of an inferiority complex was then inevitable especially with the sweet-toothed Westerners who only viewed their labor as tools to maximize their profits rather than humans. Thus, concludes the under-arching argument set forth by Williams of the origin of racism from…
