According to a report by the U.S. Department of Justice about 40% of females and 31% of males in prison are reported to have some kind of disability. This is very significant as disabled inmates struggle the most in adapting to the prison environment, due to the lack of equipment and funding available in the correction system.
Prison population has always been a topic in today's political topics. According to the journal for every specific number of prisoners a certain amount of those will have a disability; as stated by the following, “About 2 in 10 prisoners… are reported having a cognitive disability, the most common reported disability in each population”. To the amazement of many people females are known to have more disabilities than men for no known reason. This is supported as of the following, “Female prisoners were more likely than males to report having a cognitive disability, but were equally likely to report having each of the other five disabilities”. Former incarcere Peter Johnson stated to LA Times (Los Angeles Times), “We are treated like the worst of the worst because of our disabilities”. This statement emphasizes how the lack of proper procedure makes it difficult for the disabled inmates to contribute with the rest of the incarcerates. Adding to this it is very important for society to understand that these people are unable to act like other individuals in the free world. They require special needs and other requirements that such as; around the clock supervising, medication, requirement of oxygen and other medical equipment. This leads to my following subject of which prisons lack
